Toronto had its municipal election yesterday. We voted for Mayor, City Councillor and School Board Trustee. What’s to make of all this? …
Two things really:
A) our electoral system is woefully behind the times and ought to include:
i) moving municipal voting to a Saturday or Sunday so folks have time to vote (turnout was 52% yesterday – good but should be better); and,
ii) a run-off option so we aren’t faced with the ridiculous situation where the Mayor Elect becomes Mayor even though more people in the city opposed him then voted for him (Rob Ford – 47%; George Simmerman, et al – 53%).
B) Toronto has long been called “Hogtown” and we now have a pig as Mayor to prove it.
Go figure.
