First of all, thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers; they are truly appreciated. Papa sends his thanks too!
I’ve returned from London and can report the following:
- Papa’s surgery is completed. They operated for 3 hours. Dr. Izawa said it went
well; - the team do not think the cancer spread past his prostrate;
though they removed the lymph nodes as well (these have gone to pathology and
we’ll have final results on that in two weeks time); - because Papa is a
runner, he has enlarged blood veins (which is good and healthy in a man his age)
but they required overstitching (which was challenging and not so good); and - they were able to spare one bunch of nerves on one side of the prostrate (which
is good news re: post-prostrate surgery sexual function and incontinence issues) but not the second bunch on the side of the prostrate that was heavily
damaged by cancer.
So, all-in-all, we’re quite happy … pending the final pathology report in two weeks time.
My thanks to London Health Sciences, to Dr. Izawa and his steady hands, and to his great team!
Everyone under the sun came to visit Papa whilst in hospital, including my niece and nephew. Nephew E now wants to be a cancer scientist (in addition to a chef) and asked umpteen questions about Papa and his condition. We’ve always been a very open family and Papa explained and showed nephew E everything: his intravenous drips, his catheter, his blood drain line, his wound.
Papa was released – astonishingly – on Saturday afternoon, two days after major surgery! He looks great and claims to have little pain. It was a great Mother’s Day present for my mom for sure!
Sunday’s movie: Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
Nephew E and I went to see this cute film on Saturday afternoon. It was silly but fun and he really enjoyed it.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see a lot of my niece P. At age twelve, P’s been attending the London School for the Performing Arts for 4 years now and was busy rehearsing for a tour she’s heading out on – to Boston – next week. She did manage to corner me at the hospital on Saturday and has convinced me to pick up the paint brush again and do a painting for her bedroom, which she is re-decorating to be more ‘funky’. She wants a smaller version of “Coming Thru White” (the painting G and I did in the livingroom). So, once back from out west, I shall get on that for you P. Promise.
Sunday’s game: 3-D Pinball
This was certainly the game of choice during this trip. Nephew E and I played game after game after game. And FYI E, I’m still the pinball wizard! You’ll be a spell beating my 2,221,600 points!
