Okay, my friend V, has been pestering me for 3 years about Dragon Boating … and for three years I’ve politely said ‘no’.
After Ironman I was not keen on doing much, especially anything competitive. And the main team V paddles with is quite competitive. However, this summer, V is organizing a ‘recreational’ dragon boating group.
And you know what? …. I’m gonna floor him and say “Sure, I’m in!” If any other Toronto xangsters are interested, here’s the details. I can link you to V if you wanna join.
We would like to invite you to join us for a summer of fun out in the lakes of Ontario paddling for our yet to be named dragon boat team. The first task of the team is to vote on a team name so start thinking up ideas… The details are as follows:
Practices:
12 practices in total on Wednesdays from 7-8pm at the Balmy Beach Club Canoe Club. The first practice will be June 21, 2006.
2 regattas for the season; Woodstock Dragon Boat Festival (August 12) and Great White North Dragon Boat Challenge (September 9-10).
Coached by two experienced paddlers with coaching experience and a total of well over 10 years of paddling experience.
The goal of this team it to promote the sport of dragon boating at a beginner level and establish the passion of the sport to new and returning paddlers. This team will primarily be recreational, BUT once in a while, we’ll kick it up a notch or two – we’re sure you’d like to go home with a medal around your neck.
A boat has 20 paddling at one time, but the goal is to field a team of 24 in case of conflicting schedules. Each paddler is guaranteed at least 2 races on a regatta day (3 races per day).
10 Practices at Balmy Beach Club Canoe Club = $750
Woodstock Dragon Boat Festival = $650 (if booked by May 1st)
Great White North Dragon Boat Challenge + 2 free Practices = $1498 (if booked by May 1st )
Total Cost = $2898.00
Ideally, we would like to get commitment from prospective members by April 24th, this way we can qualify for the early bird prices (the cost for regattas increases after May 1st). Since, we only have 24 spots available, it is on a first-come-first-serve basis, please let us know ASAP if you’re interested.
