First off, let me say I was NOT driving when I snapped this picture this morning. I was stopped at a light. I looked over and saw these …. doilies for cars that protect the headrest. Brilliant idea! I want stock; I think it’ll be a big seller! … No really!
The woman driving this little car probably crocheted these herself. Nothing like a handcrafted artisan product. Now, I need to speak to JC about advancing some venture capital dollars for this initiative. Anyone else want in? ….
Doilies for cars … the next big fad!
Personal Disaster Services Responder
Like I’ve time to be doing more, but I spent the past two days getting trained to act as a PDAT (Personal Disaster Assistance Team) volunteer with Canadian Red Cross. Red Cross does some amazing work and I thought, hey, time to give a little back to the community. A PDAT responder heads out to fires and provides assistance to folks who have been displaced from their homes/apartment/rooming house. They also work hand-in-hand with the City during Heat/Cold Weather Alerts, pandemic responses (like SARS), and stand-by if (knock wood) a major disaster struck Toronto.
Prior to being accepted on the training I had to:
- get a police record check (I’m clean!);
- a driver’s record check (funny since I hardly ever drive, but again, I’m clean!); and,
- do a self-directed exam (scored 92% on that … yay me!).
The training was very good I thought, great adult-learning principles followed, and the facilitators were excellent! My next step is to renew my first aid (gosh, brings back my Lifeguarding days) and shadow a response callout. After that I can be deployed to respond to local disasters here and in the United States: think Hurricane Katrina deployment. Very cool!
1) here’s where I spent 21 hours over the past two days; 2) here’s one of the Red Cross Trainers doing their thing; 3) here’s me doing the final exam
Thursday’s food: The Oscar Dinner
OMG! We’re like into full blown prep mode for the Oscar dinner this Saturday night. Last night after the training, I prepared braised lamb shanks, which is just one small part of one course we’re serving. G made a honey/garlic teriyaki sauce as well. We’ve two days left to prepare! How exciting. I’ll do a post Sunday on the whole adventure plus the complete menu. I’m not supposed to reveal it yet.
