The Chinese Delegation

I keep meaning to post about my adventure with the Chinese delegation that visited my office a few weeks ago …. so finally here’s the post …

We had a group of 10 delegates from a suburb of Beijing visit, including an Olympic Games Committee member, the Director of the Public Health Unit/Hospitals and the Director of the Disabled Persons’ Association … no doubt shadowed by some form of party member to ensure no one defected (I do think I had him pegged) and a translator. These folks were interested in the same field of work I practice: neuromotor rehabilitation.

It all went very well and when I entered the meeting room I immediately started using my (poor) mandarin, which, I must admit, caught the group by surprise and was a great hit! Me loves it. I’ve now an open invite to the city, and was gifted upon finishing my presentation with this lovely framed Beijing Olympics mascot. Very cool!

Next month we’ve a group of 52 South Koreans visiting. Sadly, my Korean (despite all the movies/tv shows I watch) is nonexistent.

I get the feeling you are under-rating you Mandarin. Does that mean you will be at the Olympics in Beijing!!

  5. WOW! Does this mean you’ll be in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics?

  6. If you get me a ticket to get me up to where you are, I can do the Korean speaking for you.

Saying a few words in Mandarin was a very nice gesture. And I doubt if your Mandarin is as poor as you say it is.
