Well, what can you say about this utterly unique restaurant? ….
Ted’s Range Road Diner is a corrugated tin shack about 2kms up a road in the middle of nowhere that leads, ultimately, to a Canadian Army training/range ground. It seats about 20 at mismatched tables with mismatched chairs. The beer on tap is “10W30” and your choice of wine is: red or white. The interior is decaying clapboard and the (overpriced) menu is posted on several blackboards on the wall by the bathroom. Elegance and charm is voided here and eclectic, campy dinerness rules.
As we drove up, dodging crazy recruits trolling along the road in army vehicles, the parking lot greeted us with two hogs and several cars in varying states of decomposition. How’d we hear about such a culinary stopping post? … well, my parents of course who had visited a few months back.
Eating at Ted’s is an experience for sure. I’m not convinced it’s worth more than a once-in-a-lifetime visit. The food was okay (the sea bass excellent; Ted’s poivre steak less so), but this place is more about the experience than much else I think. It’s menu is, granted, diverse: elk, bison, alligator, sea bass, pickerel, emu, dog (I’m just kidding … no dog). I am glad I went and I would go back if I ever find myself in the middle of nowhere again … though this time, I’d follow the lead of the biker dudes inside and come for beer and appetizers rather than a meal.
If you go, make a reservation beforehand.
10) dessert was back in Meaford!
