45°

45° Celsius!

It was 45°C today in Toronto when you factored in the humidex! Forty-five degrees. I can’t count that high let alone imagine it this warm. But it was!

For reference sake, that’s like hotter than hell!  Humidity sucks! It is the bane of Toronto in the summer. Toronto Life magazine recently had a fascinating article about what Toronto will be like as global warming continues its evil ways, and which paints a very ugly picture for us all come 2020. If you think today was nasty, just wait! …..

OMG, so  what’s a lad to do? Well, bugger off and spend the day in the cooling comfort of Toronto Island of course, which is exactly what I did.

And blessed bloody amen for that!

Annual Pride Rant
Where to start with this? … well, here, my thoughts from last year on Pride in Toronto. More particularly, it is the parade which (economic benefits aside) continues drive me nuts, not to mention do the gay community a dis-service.

I know I am in a minority here but witness below the news coverage found in Monday’s National Post (page A7) on Pride. Now I know one picture, in one newspaper with one short byline does not sum up the encompassing week of good deeds, activities and events that Pride is, but here is the image portrayed as a summation of the week to Torontonians.

How coverage like this does anything to move gay rights forward is utterly beyond me. I am certainly not blaming the Post, their coverage has been good over the week. However, as a community we must step back and look critically at the cost/benefit (read: harm/good) the Pride Parade provides us. We must do this with fresh, modern eyes. And in doing so, surely, we must admit it is time to put this antiquated event out to pasture, permanently.

think of this way it is the only weekend when straight and queer are together to celebrate diversity and acceptance. I wish we should do more outreach then one weekend. We’re the one who is doing the dis-service when 80% of gays care about muscle/body and beauty! That will be one big barrier we have to break in our community. Pride: Unstoppable!

The gay community here decided to cancel Pride this year because of negative images being presented that help support the gay stereotype. Next years will be a weekend event with a display of individual art. It will also include booths of food and gay professional services as well as gay-friendly shops, etc.
