Maraschino Madness

So with my Pride appearance out of the way, it was on to far more important things … namely:

B&G’s Famous
Handpicked
Hand-Pitted
Handmade
Maraschino Cherries
Who Needs Balls When You’ve Got Cherries

Start this adventure with 2.5 lbs of cherries, which – sadly – you’ll need to hand-pit. This is not a fun job as it involves cherry juices spraying your kitchen and staining your fingers.

1) wash & drain cherries; 2) hand-pit them (oh joy); 3) the final pitted product

4) soak in alum and salt for 24hrs; 5) prepare a sugar mixture of 2cups water to 7 cup sugar!;
6) toss cherries in and let ’em boil for 2 mins

7) leave ’em to soak another 24hrs in the sugar syrup that you’ve teased up with almond extract and Amaretto (you can add red food colouring at this point to give ’em that horrible fake red colour but we make our au natural)

8) prepare the jars; 9) prepare the cherries by heating them one more time; 10) can them and give them the old canning boiling bath for 8 minutes

11) Cool another 24 hrs and voila! … Real Homemade Maraschino Cherries

Now your only decision is whether it’s Shirley Temples or G’s famous “Cupid’s Cosmicpolitan?

Decadent!

    call me naive, call me stupid, call me a freakin dumbass….but I never new those cocktail cherries were made from REAL cherries! Something about the neon-pinkish-red candy color always screamed “citric dioxinate, glutiosyruptitious, red No.13, blue No. 76, and sugar”. very cool how you made them! I’ll take the Cosmicpolitan.
